Matthew Goins' company, Blue Chip Picks, makes picks for many of the world's leading guitar and banjo players from its Knoxville, TN factory. His customers are passionate about their music and their instruments. But his passion is his barn, located on his property just outside town.
"It's a really cool looking barn; it's perfect," he says. "I get a lot of compliments from my neighbors about it. You can see it from the road, and it really sets the tone for the whole property."
Goins' barn, a steel building that meets his exact specifications, is Arco Building Systems' Building of the Month for February and his building of a lifetime.
"I wanted a metal building for its durability and to seal out the elements and birds," he says. "It was a two-year project to plan and build it. I use it to store my tractors and farm equipment, which I've kept even though it's no longer a working farm. We knocked down the old shed where we had kept everything."
Goins turned to Arco after a contractor putting up another building in the area said he didn't want to work with him.
"Carolyn was great," he says. "I wanted it to look like a barn with the overhangs and the 4-12 roof pitch. She took care of everything for me. I prepared the site and poured the concrete, and when I was ready, everything was there. I had some concerns about having something shipped from out of state, but Arco had everything just as we had specified and ordered it – and it was $10,000 cheaper than the other guy."
His advice to anyone considering a metal building is to make sure you find a company that can give you everything you want and cares about it.
"When you do that," he adds, "distance is no problem."
