When Carroll Metal Works of Bloomingdale, OH needed a bigger building to handle its expanding business, owner Brian Carroll turned to Arco Building Systems for a steel building that could meet his company's heavy-duty industrial demands. Meeting Carroll Metal Works' needs resulted in a 54-by-80-foot pre-engineered building with a 25-foot eave height to handle an overhead bridge crane and provide a safe environment for welding operations. The company assembles access platforms for oil and gas wells, pig-pit containment tanks for gas and oil pipeline, commercial steel stairs, commercial and residential railings and structural iron framework for commercial buildings (not pre-engineered buildings).
The key for Carroll was to accommodate the crane.
"We bought the crane used," he said, "and then we had Arco design the building for the crane's capacity and width. The crane requires the strength of steel construction, and the steel building offered the flame resistance for our welding processes. Additionally, it offered greater cost-effectiveness over other building materials."
Carroll's employees had the expertise to erect the steel building themselves, and he also had the concrete floor finished so that it could provide a working surface and provide a flat area surrounding the building perimeter to provide access for construction equipment. Those steps added to the cost-efficiency.
Carroll says the best advice he can offer the prospective buyer of a steel building is to make sure all the needed materials are included in the price quote
