Steve Terry didn't hesitate to call Arco when UNCC's Environmental Health and Safety Group was moving into a new modular office complex and needed additional storage, Steve, the Facilities Construction Coordinator at the University of North Carolina Charlotte (UNCC) knew the 'go to guys' were Arco Steel Buildings. It's the fifth steel building he's purchased from Arco.
Steve cited three reasons for choosing Arco. He knew the new structure would comply with all applicable building codes and it would be easy to maintain. He also has a good track record with Arco's reliability and customer service.
"My first building went up via a 3rd party distributor, not Arco, and it was fraught with issues up to the install," he says. "It went smoothly after that, thanks to Bell Construction."
Arco became Steve's material supplier for the next building, the Grounds Storage building (35 x 75), followed by 4 other buildings – the Regional Utility Plant 2 Storage Building (24 x 48), Football Storage (40 x 80), Field 13 Storage (24 x 32) and then the new EHS building (24 x 48).
The Grounds Maintenance building the first direct partnership with UNCC. It was erected just behind the grandstand on the left of the brand new stadium, and you can see it how quickly it went up in the time-lapse video of the stadium's construction.
Steve is far from finished with Arco pre-engineered buildings.
"I have 3 more in the design approval stage that I hope to see accepted and go up this year," he adds.
Steve's Advice
Steve advises steel building buyers to do their homework to have a good experience.
"Know what you want the building to do for you," he says. "What it will store? What are your environmental needs? What are the warranties? What is the manufacturer's reputation, and do they use certified installation crews?"
Steve says steel building owners can make their project go more smoothly by learning how to design in available footage (length and height) increments to facilitate engineering design. He also advises selecting a solid concrete company for your foundation – one that has installed structural support slabs for steel buildings.
"Arco is now the 'Storage Building' Standard for UNC Charlotte," Steve says. "Any requests to have one put up will be an Arco steel building."
